ARTIST STATEMENT
My work deals with themes of perceived perfection and control within fine art photography. This perspective entails intentional curation and styling that celebrate both human and material forms. The way a garment falls, a face is obscured, colors blend, and light hits, all point to studied planning of a desired outcome. The idea that intentional curation is a fake portrayal of life, or an unachievable expectation to be imposed on oneself, is to overlook it as art. On the contrary, this means being able to appreciate various forms of beauty without turning them into a critique of yourself, but instead to enjoy the vision of your own life. It means borrowing from art to inspire the areas you want to change within yourself; and then leaving the rest as an appreciation of a creative vision.
I want to create a moment where you experience the “styled world” and are inspired to notice the beauty around you. This reflects the control you have over the output of your own life and how it can flourish. I have pulled away the distractions in my work to highlight the natural beauty that already exists in both the human form and in fashion.
My inspiration is drawn from several artist’s works such as Stephanie William, a fashion and editorial photographer. She has motivated me with her studio quality work reminiscent of magazine covers, as well as her emphasis on color specific stories. The older black and white images of renowned photographer Richard Avedon have also influenced my work. He described fashion photography as a “vacation from life,” and this is the artistic value I hope to bring through my own collection and dialogue of perceived perfection.
